British Voters Swing to Tories, but Majority Is in Doubt

After one of the most passionately contested elections in decades, the Conservative Party was headed toward big, though not necessarily decisive, gains in Britain early on Friday.
Submit Your Election Day Photos
Send photographs documenting your experience of election day across the United Kingdom.
Incomplete results from 650 House of Commons constituencies across the country pointed to a strong performance on Thursday by the opposition party, led by David Cameron, though the size of the increase in the Conservative vote raised doubts about the party’s ability to win the majority needed to be sure of regaining power after 13 years of Labour control.
What seemed sure was that the Conservatives would win the largest number of seats, probably dozens more than Labour, with the third party, the left-of-center Liberal Democrats, trailing in third. But without a majority, Mr. Cameron — and the country — could be heading for days of agonizing uncertainty as the two main parties set about trying to outmaneuver each other for power.
Mr. Cameron was restrained as he won re-election in his Oxfordshire constituency. He said his party appeared likely to win more seats than in any election in 80 years, but avoided making claim to the keys at 10 Downing Street, saying, “What will guide me will be what’s in the national interest.”
If that hinted at a Conservative bid to govern with the Liberal Democrats, he was unsparing in his remarks about Labour. “I believe it’s already clear that Labour has lost its mandate to govern,” he said.
But with the national picture unclear, a long line of powerful Labour figures appeared on television to set out what appeared to be an orchestrated rationale for hanging on to power, even if the party finished far behind the Conservatives in the numbers of Commons seats.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, although winning re-election in his Edinburgh-area constituency with an increased majority, appeared subdued as he thanked voters. His remarks appeared deliberately ambiguous, leaving open the possibility that he would fight to stay on as prime minister, or step aside to make way for another Labour leader more acceptable to the Liberal Democrats. “The outcome is not yet known,” he said, “but it is my duty to play my part to form a strong and principled government.”
Partial results announced showed a sharp swing from Labour to the Conservatives in seats in northern England that had been Labour strongholds for decades, with voter shifts from one party to the other that ranged from 5 to 11 percent. And early returns from central and southern England suggested a similarly strong shift to the Conservatives — in some cases as high as 10 percent — that raised, at least briefly, Conservative hopes of gaining a clear majority.
Pollsters had said that a nationwide swing of 7 percent in the Conservatives’ favor might be enough for a slim majority. Across many parts of England, the party appeared to have approached or even surpassed that standard, and it made some surprising gains in Wales.
But the overall picture was spotty, with the Conservatives not posting the consistent gains across the country that they needed, and with the Labour vote holding up far better in some areas, especially Scotland, than in others. Notably, the Conservatives failed to win several seats that were high on a list of 116 that they identified as the most promising targets.
But perhaps the biggest surprise was the lackluster performance of the Liberal Democrats, who showed no sign of the major breakthrough that many had expected after the show-stealing performance of the party’s leader, Nick Clegg, in three televised election debates that were the centerpiece of the campaign. Partial returns suggested that they might win only about as many seats, 62, as they took in the last election, in 2005.
Peter Mandelson, the Labour Party’s chief strategist and an influential cabinet colleague of Mr. Brown’s, said that Labour had “the right to seek
That pointed to a bid by Labour to form a coalition, or some other arrangement, with the Liberal Democrats. But the unimpressive performance of the Liberal Democrats stood as a potential obstacle to that plan, since a Liberal Democrat bloc of about 60 seats would be likely to leave Labour and the Liberal Democrats together with barely as many seats as the Conservatives.
In what appeared to be an opening bid for the Liberal Democrats’ support, Mr. Mandelson said that a fairer voting system should replace the existing one that resulted in smaller parties like the Liberal Democrats generally winning far fewer seats, proportionally, than their popular vote share. Mr. Clegg has said that a shift to another voting system fairer to small parties will be a non-negotiable demand in post-election discussions with Labour and the Conservatives.

Ex-NFL star Lawrence Taylor charged with NY rape

was charged Thursday with raping a 16-year-old runaway who police said was forced into prostitution by a man who had beaten her up.
Taylor, a 51-year-old former New York Giants star who has faced drug and tax evasion charges in the past, paid the girl $300 for sex in a Holiday Inn, where he was arrested early Thursday, said Christopher St. Lawrence, supervisor of the town of Ramapo.Article Controls
The man who'd beaten the girl drove her to Taylor's suburban hotel room while she texted her uncle for help, police said.
Ramapo Chief of Police Peter Brower said Taylor was cooperative when police woke him up around 4 a.m. Taylor was arraigned Thursday on charges of third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute.
"I'm not that important," Taylor told a scrum of media after being released on $75,000 bail.
His attorney, Arthur Aidala, said Taylor is a "loving family man" who did not have sex with the teenager.
Rate This Story"My client did not have sex with anybody," Aidala said. "Lawrence Taylor did not rape anybody."
Brower would not comment on whether Taylor knew the girl's age; third-degree rape is a charge levied when the victim is under the age of consent, which is 17 in New York.
"Ignorance is not an excuse to an individual's age," Brower said.
Police said the girl was reported missing by her family in March and had been staying with a 36-year-old parolee, Rasheed Davis, in the Bronx. The two met a few weeks ago at a Bronx bus stop, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.
"He chats her up. She explains she doesn't have a place to stay. He provides one," Browne said.
Davis then forced her to perform sexual favors for others, authorities said.
Early Thursday morning, Davis punched and kicked her, drove her to the hotel against her will and told her she had to have sex with Taylor, police said. When she refused, Davis handed her over to Taylor, who sexually assaulted her, they said. Taylor paid her $300, which she gave to Davis, police said.
On the way to Suffern, the girl sent text messages to her uncle spelling out what was happening, Browne said. The uncle then went to the NYPD, he said.
Davis was arrested on charges of unlawful imprisonment, assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced in April 1994 to eight to 25 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter. He was paroled in March 2008.
There was no phone number listed at the address provided by police for Davis, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney. His relationship with the girl was unclear.
The Bronx district attorney's office refused to comment.
Taylor was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999 and competed in ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" last year. He had a highly publicized struggle with drug addiction and has had multiple legal run-ins since retiring from football.
At the Metamorphecise Spa in Pembroke Pines, Fla., where Taylor works out and did some of his training for his stint on the dance competition show, much of the talk Thursday was about the charges and how most people simply couldn't believe the local resident was guilty.
"He's a regular guy, a good guy who just goes about his business," said Steffen Grover, who said he'd spoken to Taylor once or twice. "I think he just wants to be like everyone else."
Police said no drugs were found in Taylor's hotel room on Thursday but a bottle of alcohol was.
A quick, fierce and athletic linebacker who redefined his position, Taylor anchored the Giants' defense and led them to Super Bowls titles in 1987 and 1991. He was selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.
A 10-time Pro Bowler, he was the NFL Most Valuable Player in 1986 and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1981, 1982 and 1986. He recorded 132 1/2 sacks, which doesn't included his 9 sacks in 1981 when the statistic wasn't official.
In 2001, Taylor was convicted of possessing drug paraphernalia in New Jersey. The conviction stemmed from the September 1998 discovery in a hotel room of a butane torch and other materials commonly used to smoke crack.
In 1996 and 1997, he was arrested in South Carolina and Florida on drug charges. In those cases, he either admitted his guilt or agreed to enter a pretrial intervention program.
In 2000, he drew five years of federal probation for filing false tax returns and for tax evasion.
Taylor is due in court again on the latest charges on June 10.

Research on Channel Estimation and Equalization for WiMAX

So this paper will research on the channel estimation and equalization for WiMAX, and to do simulation for the physical layer of WiMAX.First, according to the principles of OFDM and DFT, this paper sets up the OFDM system simulation model based on the FFT . The signal transmitter and receiver are realized in this model. Second, this paper does the research and simulation on channel estimation algorithm, such as LS, MMSE, Interpolation and so on. MMSE algorithm is superior to LS algorithm from the Simulation results. But MMSE has more complexity than LS .Third, this paper researches on the equalization algorithm such as ZF equalization, MMSE equalization and does simulation of these. Finally this paper set up the WiMAX system simulation model which is based on the IEEE802.16e. The channel estimation and equalization algorithm are realized in this simulation.

Friend, Philosopher & Guide

I've decided to write
as much as I can
before I leave you all.
I’m sure that I'll gain
through my mistakes;
no heaven will fall.

Thoughts of wisdom
discovered through
the passage of time
are not to be wasted away.
Life is a one-way train
running on its expressway,
this single journey
never brings one back
to those esteemed listeners
who still remain
to keep thinking on;
so visions are vented free
through my words,
don't you find my
urges that always play?

Get my feelings
when I'm hurt,
feel my joys
when I'm blissfully touched.
Touch my sorrows
If I'm sad;

I'll tell you everything
what I want to say,
only thing I need
is your rapt attention.
Life inspires me
throughout my journey
while I find muses
kindling my flair -
I voice not my choices,
but my findings so far gathered
are those lines
which you read here -
a write-up of my life.

Life is my
Friend Philosopher & Guide.

Just Listen

I suspect that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention. And especially if it's given from the heart. When people are talking, there's no need to do anything but receive them. Just take them in. Listen to what they're saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. Most of us don't value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me along time to believe in the power of simple saying, "I'm so sorry," when someone is in pain. And meaning it. One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted to tell her that they once had something just like that happen to them. Then her pain became a story about themselves. Eventually she stopped talking to most people. It was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief ,of having someone just listen.
I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the tissues until I realized that passing a person a tissue may be just another way to shut them down, to take them out of their experience of sadness and grief. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young. I thought people listened only because they were too timid to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well intentioned words.

Against all Racism

If I am acting shamefully, is that an excuse for you to do the same? Of course not! There are certainly racial problems in America, as well as horrible unfairness in riches, and a warlike nature that is dangerous and disgusting. I have always fought against these dishonorable features of my homeland. Unfortunately, our rulers are not listening to their citizens nor to world opinion. That is no excuse for Chinese institutions to behave badly. Since I am now working to place teachers in China, that is where I see a problem, and it is my duty to expose it, and try to correct it.

Many people of Chinese origin are proud of their ancestry, and wish to return to the homeland of their family. Many have been successful, and wish to share that success with their cousins who remain in China. Is that really so hard to understand? Many Blacks, Indians, and other racial sub-groups have developed a great curiosity and even a love for China, and wish to grow more familiar. Is that a crime? Those who want to come to China with good intentions should be welcomed with open arms. Any other behavior is counter to the interests of China, and shameful. To put image above honor, or to reject a human being because of their race will never good behavior.

Do you think that I will get rewarded for writing this letter? I stand only to lose money and connections. The Chinese agencies that I work with might become angry with me.

I have offered to provide teacher candidates without charging any fee. What more can I do? I cannot control the actions of others, but I am trying to help people who are being treated unfairly. Please step forward, and help me be a force for good.

Build and Design

The fit and finish of the Sony VAIO FW sony vgp-bps9 is wonderful, and the overall design is beautiful. The notebook has a streamlined sculpted look, and when opened has a palmrest and keyboard surround that looks like the graceful sloping surface of a car hood. The surface starts out flat, has a small dip, and then gracefully slopes down to the screen hinges. From working day in and day out at a ThinkPad, it is much easier on the eyes to say the least.
Build quality is excellent, with the overall chassis feeling rigid and sturdy. Although thin at the very edges of the palmrest, you can pick the notebook up from the corner with minimal flex from the chassis. Even the super thin screen shows that quite a bit of effort went into making a durable design, as you are able to man-handle and even punch the back of the LCD panel and no ripples or distortion shows on the display.Sony VGP-BPS9/B

Screen

I have to say that my first impression of the true HD screen format was one of hatred.Sony VGP-BPS9/S Another odd format I would have to get used to, and more odd screen designations to remember. I figured it would be just another gimmick ... but then I started to enjoy it. Outside of watching movies, the extra-wide wide screen is great for organizing many tasks on the screen, where a normal widescreen display just starts to feel crowded. Two documents side by side, a webpage next to a document, or even a webpage with my IM buddy list far off to the side. Of course it is nice for movies as well.

Moving past the widescreen experience and onto the LCD quality itself, it was rather disappointing on our review model.Sony VGP-BPS9A On anything but full brightness you could see a tunnel effect where the sides and corners were much darker thand the center of the screen. At full brightness it was more even, and was passed by early on. Not counting the tunneling effect, brightness range was more than adequate. I found the most comfortable setting at home to be 50-60% and 70-80% in the office. Anything above that it strained my vision.

Colors appeared to be rich, sony vgp-bpl8 if not slightly over saturated. Contrasted felt washed out, with black levels seemed to be leaning more towards grey/white. Watching a dark movie at high brightness became very distracting, especially with the unevenbacklight.

Viewing angles were better than what I have seen on some notebooks,fpcbp160 with a larger sweet spot before colors started to invert or distort. Vertical range had about 45 degrees down and 35 degrees up before colors started to get funky. Horizontal viewing range was flawless besides a mild orange tint at extreme angles.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The "Macbook Style" keyboard on the Sony FW fpcbp182 (yes, Sony did it first, but most people recognize this style of keyboard as a "Mac" keyboard) was delightful to type on once you got the hang of finger placement and distances between keys down. Spacing is just slightly off from a standard keyboard, and without the cupped keys, it can be difficult to type on the keyboard without some practice. That said, compared to other keyboard of similar design (Macbook, MacBook Air) the keyboard on the Sony FW was much nicer to type on.

Key throw distances were about the same as most keyboards, and with each press came a soft click feeling. Support underneath the keyboard was great with little to no flex. It felt as if you could stand on the keyboard without making anything cave inward.lifebook t4215 battery

The touchpad surface was great, large enough for wide motions and sensitive for smooth sliding without having to adjust any settings. The touchpad buttons were the only drawback, being at the same height as the palmrest, and just barely off the surface of the touchpad. Finding the key without looking down usually ended with tapping the touchpad instead of the button.sony vgp-bps8a

Movie Experience

True HD displays are basically what you have in your living room or TV room if you own an HDTV.vgp-bps8b 720P or 1080P screens are slightly shorter than what you usually find on a computer. For example on a WUXGA notebook has a resolution of 1920x1200, where as a Full HD 1080P screen is 1920x1080. This has to do with the way most movies are recorded, and in the end thinner or no bars at all showing up during a movie. Below I picked 3 Blu-ray titles from my collection, to give you a good idea of what you might expect to see on this screen format.
Ports and Features

Port selection on the Sony VAIO FW sony vgp-bpl8a rates average, and one USB port less of perfection. Users have two video outputs (HDMI and VGA) for easy hookup to external monitors or your home theater HDTV. In some ways the design of the notebook hinders the port layout, as some curved locations which would be prime for an extra USB port end up being too small to work out. The ports and feature selection include the following:

10/100/1000 LAN
Modem
VGA
HDMI
FireWire
ExpressCard/34
Memory Stick Reader
SD-Card Reader
Headphone/Mic
3 USB Ports
Speakers and Audio

The speakers on the Sony FW vgp-bps2a were rather anemic. To enjoy a movie or game at normal volume levels meant putting everything to 100%, and still not being at the level you wanted it to be. Getting past volume levels, bass and midrange were entirely lacking, which is very disappointing for a multimedia oriented notebook. vgp-bps2b

For external audio,vgp-bps2c the headphone jack worked fine providing clear audio from what I could hear through my Sennheiser HD80 headphones. This option would be preferred over having to listen to the speakers. The third and probably best option for external audio is the HDMI port. The ATI 3470 graphics supported audio out through the HDMI port, and thus worked perfectly for enjoying your favorite movie on the big screen.hp dv2000

Performance

System performance was very good for most tasks not involving 3D graphics.dell inspiron 6400 battery Working with office productivity software, surfing the web, encoding video, or just looking through your iTunes library performed quite well without any lag. The disappointing part was trying to play semi-modern games such as Half-Life 2 or Portal, and getting very poor frame rates. The ATI 3470 graphics didn't really help with much besides offloading video decoding while enjoying a Blu-ray movie. I would have much rather seen a 3650 series graphics card, considering notebooks like the Toshiba A305 which fall into the same price category offer this. To give you a quick example of what the game play was like, here is my average FPS while playing HL2: Episode 2 and Portal.

Half Life 2: Episode 2 (1360x768, textures on low and most settings disabled): 18-23FPS depending on what scenery you were looking at. Extra characters on screen like enemies or gunfire brought it down even more.hp compaq 6510b battery

Portal (1360x768, textures on medium and most settings disabled): 40FPS walking around, 28FPS looking through a portal. High action scenes where you are flying through the air slowed down even further into the low 20 range.

While you technically could lower the resolution even more to one of the lower 4:3 settings, you would be looking at a warped screen and really lose any fun while playing. Trying to play at the native 1600x900 was even worse than the scaled down resolution of 1360x768, with frame rate levels dropping by 5 or 10. For a notebook of this size and cost, it is a big letdown with no higher graphics option available.fujitsu t5010 battery
